Requirements: Education:
(Some) high school
Experience: At least six months of work experience as a railway labourer OR
six months of experience doing any physically demanding job (on the job
training will be provided).
Languages: Speak English, Read English Weight
Handling: 25 kg (50 lbs) sometimes

Job Duties: Operate machines and equipment to lay, maintain and repair railway
tracks, align tracks, transfer, spread, level and tamp ballast around ties and
rails and to clear snow from tracks; Patrol assigned track sections to identify
and report damaged or broken track; Grind end of rails, remove old spikes,
drive new spikes, cut ties, and perform related maintenance while working as a
member of a work crew; Operate light and heavy yard maintenance machinery
(portable grinder, spike puller, and others); Operate power and manual tools; Use
power drill to drill holes through rail or tie plates for insertion of bolts
and spikes; Operates track wrench machine to tighten or loosen bolts at rail
joints; Operates rail saw to cut rail to specified lengths; Loading, unloading,
and general handling of materials and equipment as instructed; Basic maintenance
work on machinery used; Perform manual labor; Perform other track maintenance
duties as directed.
Basic
Qualifications: Able to read, write, and
communicate (speak, hear, and understand) English for safety rules; Able to
work outdoors in all weather conditions; Able to work on and around heavy
equipment; Able to follow written and oral directions; Comply with all company
and FRA safety procedures, policies, and rules, including wearing required safety equipment.
Physical and
Mental Demands: Able to lift and carry up to 25kg
(50 pounds) (Possible heavy lifting over 50 pounds); Able to walk, stand, bend,
stoop, kneel, and sit for extended periods of time; Skill in use of tools and
machines for grounds maintenance, including a tractor and other machinery; Able to use hands to hold, grasp,
turn or pull; Able to reach over shoulder level; Able to work with loud noises,
chemicals, fumes, dirt, and dust; Able
to use phones and radios; Able to perform heavy manual labor; Able to operate
tools and equipment safely and efficiently.
